A fundraising concert to support the Otago Girls' and Boys' Jazz Band's Trip to Blenheim for the Southern Jam

Jazz ensembles from Otago Girls and Boys' combine with Regional Finalists from the Rockquest competition to present a "jazz rock fusion" concert to raise funds towards the jazz band's upcoming trip to Blenheim in August.

All Blues, our combined jazz band, won the award for Best Big Band in the 2024 Dunedin Youth Jazz Festival and begins their preparation for the 2026 competition season at Te Whare O Rukutia on with a number of rock bands ands jazz combos from both schools. The Big Band features alto saxophonist Callan Power, trumpeter Oban Voice, Flautist Psalm Gomez, trombonist Anson Fung and singer Audrey Tran as they present a range of repertoire, moving from the swing era to the jazz rock fusion era of the 1970s. They will present Big Band arrangements of classics such as Flight of the Foobirds (Basie), Nostalgia in Time Square (Mingus), Josie (Steely Dan), Vierd Blues (Coltrane) and Natural Woman (Motown / Arethra Franklin).

Fresh from their appearance in the Otago Regional Final of Rockquest, the all girl's band "Studio 2" will present two original songs, featuring Jet Hood (vocals), Macy Crossan (vocals and keys), Sapphire Graves (guitar), Jasmine Potter (bass) and Emily Brookes (drums). Redshift, finalists from Otago Boys', will also present a set of two original tunes, featuring Jack Yeoman on vocals and Sam Holborne on drums.

The gig will also provide an opportunity for our most talented jazz musicians to present a set of combo numbers that they will be performing at upcoming competitions. The line-up includes Callan Power (tenor), Oban Voice (trumpet), Emily Lokman (piano), Fleur de Clifford (bass) and James Phipps-Green (drums) and they will be playing tunes by Miles Davis, Lee Morgan, Roy Hargroves and Oban Voice (himself)
